POLICE RESPONSE: (please share locally) As youre aware, last week I took the advice from a post of a local resident to email Solihull Police about the crime in our area. Ive had a very positive response from two areas of the police force, and a call from Councillor Bob Sleigh. Below are the 2 emails from the police. Mr Sleigh has confirmed he is liaising closely with the police, and will keep me informed so I can keep you updated, as he doesnt use facebook. Email 1: Thank you for your insightful message in which you highlight your concerns. I am grateful that you take the time and trouble to contact us as information and public support is essential if we are to give you the level of policing you deserve. Regards your request for CCTV to be sighted in Marston Green I can advise you that CCTV systems are available but are not provided, installed or maintained by West Midlands Police, they are supplied by Solihull Council. These CCTV systems are very expensive, and so Solihull only have a relatively small number available. Their sighting and installation can be problematic as not all lamp posts are suitable. A contact number for Solihull Council is 0121 704 6000 if you wish to discuss this with them. Although crime overall has been dropping there has been a recent spate of burglary of garden sheds which is of great concern. We have undertaken proactive measures to address this including the use of plain clothes officers and night time operations which is ongoing. If you can provide me with your address we do have a limited number of West Midlands Police signs which you can erect on nearby lamp post in prominent positions. Again let me thank you for taking the time to contact us and I look forward to hearing from you. Kind Regards Meriden and Bickenhill Policing Unit. Email 2: Hello Sir, firstly allow me to introduce myself. I am PC Dave Jephcott and I am currently part of the Bickenhill and Meriden Neighbourhood Policing Team based in Balsall Common where I have been based for the last 2 and a half years. Our team currently are the neighbourhood team responsible for the Marston Green area and as you can imagine from the teams location and name we have a fairly large area of the borough to manage. At the moment we are running with 4 Constables and 1 Community Support officer to patrol and manage approximately 1 third of the Solihull Boroughs area which includes managing the exhibitions and concerts at the NEC and Genting Arena and neighbourhood Policing duties at Brimingham International Airport. At the begining of Febuary we are commencing a change to the way in which the team will operate as a direct response to issues arising out of different areas of the North and Eastern areas of Solihull Borough. A community support officer, PCSO Andy Burton and myself will be moving to work out of Chelmsley Wood Police Station and specifically allocated to the Marston Green area. This move will allow us to be based a lot closer to the area meaning we will be able to embed ourselves into the community on a more regular basis. As well as providing us with a better base to work out of it will also align us with the Chelmsley Wood Neighbourhood Team whos supervisor will be managing us meaning that any support that we may need for extra officers to support operations in the area will be easier to obtain. Your position as the administrator of the Marston Green Facebook page you are in a great position to be able to assist this transition and build links for the community to assist the Police in crime prevention. I would like to have a community of local residents create a Neighbourhood watch and/or a street watch group and your social media following could be a great asset in both the start up and the running of either schemes. Would you be interested in helping to start up either of these sort of schemes in the area and also promoting attendance to our local parish council meeting and residents meetings so that we can get more of the community involved either in person or through social media. In the coming weeks until the move we will be conducting both plain clothes and uniform operations in Marston Green to try and both prevent further offences and catch and convict offenders in the area. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards, PC 3678 Dave Jephcott Email from Councillor Bob Sleigh.
