POLICIES: Another FAQ – what are your policies? Aldermen dont actually have policies, thats a delight enjoyed by other levels of government. I usually interpret the question to mean: what do you stand for? Even thats a difficult one because, no matter my personal set of values, if I get in to council Ill be bound by a code of conduct to make fair and balanced decisions. So, what am I promising? Ill be interested, Ill do my homework, Ill talk to people with other perspectives and Ill listen to subject matter experts. Ill try not to be a jerk. Ill serve only one term so Im motivated to do all I can in that time. After that, Ill be one of 12 aldermen casting a vote on any issue. Even if Im Lord Mayor, Ill still only get one vote. If I get in Ill need you – your opinions are missing at the moment. Ill be encouraging you to make your voice heard by telling you the most effective methods to communicate with council. Hopefully we can also find other ways to communicate if the existing ways stop a lot of people from participating. So, now you know. I dont have a policy.
