POLITICS Elizabeth Quaye To Contest Krowor Parliamentary Seat Posted Nov 21, 2014 at 3:47pm With 24 months to Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections, aspirants for the two offices have started lobbying their constituents. One such hopefuls is Mrs. Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, who has showed keen interest in the Krowor Constituency parliamentary seat in the Greater-Accra region. Born and bred in a royal home at Nungua, the Agriculture M.Phil. student enters the race with a vast experience in the area of agriculture. Having worked at the Ministry of Agriculture for 20 years, rising to principal production officer, the 44-year-old believes her expertise will help enrich bills and debates in the August House. Mrs. Quaye will contest on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of which she is an active member. She is very confident of winning the party’s primaries and proceed to become the first female to represent the Krowor Constituency. She wishes to give the people of Nungua quality representation and articulate the challenges facing her people to the appropriate quarters to be resolved. She describes herself as trainers’ trainer, selfless and a listening aspirant who believes in “teaching my people how to fish and not just give them fish.” Mrs. Quaye told radioxyzonline on Thursday that education is top on her agenda and will revamp the library system to encourage reading among students and promote ICT education, bemoaning the state of basic education in the public schools in her constituency. Being a native and resident of the constituency, the affable aspirant said the NPP could have easily won the seat if their candidate was an indigene, assuring that with her natural and fantastic relationship with her constituents, she is the ideal candidate to deliver the seat to her party. She is inspired by party compatriot Mrs. Ursula Ekuful, MP for Ablekuma West. Mrs. Quaye is a product of Chemu Secondary School in Tema and Kwaadaso Agricultural College. She will soon graduate with M.Phil. from the university. Krowor is one of the 28 parliamentary constituencies in the Greater-Accra region, sharing borders with Tema West, Adenta and Ledzekuku constituencies. Nungua, Batsonya, Adogono, parts of the Spintex Road, A-Life, NTHC Estates and a stretch of the Teshie-Nungua Estates Ghana Commercial Bank Training School and the Regional Maritime University all fall under the Krowor constituency. It is one of the unsafe parliamentary seats swinging between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP with the former winning it four times as against two by the latter since 1992. Hons. J. A. Tawiah and Joshua Alabi won it in 1992 and 1996 respectively for the NDC whilst Emmanuel Adjei Boye of the NPP defeated the incumbent in the 2000elections and delivered the seat to the NPP for the first time but lost the next primary to Abraham Laryea Odai who retained the seat for the NPP before losing it to the NDC’s Dr Nii Oakley Quaye in the 2008 elections. In the 2012 polls, the NPP fielding former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice under the Kufuor administration, Lawyer Ayikoi Otoo, could not unseat the incumbent, making him the first to retain the seat for two consecutive terms. This trend makes the 2016 elections in Krowor an interesting one to watch. Source: David Ackah-Miezah/radioxyzonline/Ghana Radio XYZ Online © 2014
