POLLUTED RIVERS: Here is another idea for smaller polluted rivers: Dam the river with a shallow dam wall and have a huge pipe leading out of the dam wall which can be closed at the opposite end to the dam wall. When water enters this pipe close the pipe and precipitate silver, lead and mercury ions as chlorides. There must be a tap at the bottom of the pipe to let the precipitated material out. Further down the river repeat this setup, but precipitate copper, bismuth, cadmium, tin and antimony as sulphides. Repeat this further down the river with other metal ions.
