POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME (PCOS) In a mechanism not fully understood, small cysts form on the ovaries of some women and suppress their function. This is known as PCOS. The ovaries now fail to produce eggs as well as hormones. Male hormones now become abnormally high in such women and they exhibit male characteristics such as hair on the face, back, stomach etc. They experience problems with menstruation such as amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea etc. Other signs and symptoms include -Weight gain -Acne -High blood pressure -Pain in the pelvis Apart from being a major cause of infertility, PCOS can lead to diabetes and other heart diseases. It is a genetic disease. However women who are overweight are at high risk of being affected. TREATMENT: There is no single cure. A combined therapy of symptomatic treatment is adopted. -Birth control pills to reduce male hormone levels -Hormonal replacement therapy -Diabetic medications -Surgery See a gynecologist.
