PORT PERRY MAN STANDS AT CENOTAPH AS HONOUR GUARD FOR FALLEN SOLDIER The Canadian flag, it’s bright red maple leaf a stark contrast to the grey October sky, flies at half mast in front of the Scugog Township municipal office. A gesture repeated in almost every town and city across the country as Canadians take time to remember the life of Cpl. Nathan Cirrillo, who was shot and killed in Ottawa while standing as an honour guard in front of the National War Memorial on October 22. David St. Denis, Sergeant-at-Arms for Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 419, Port Perry, woke up a few days later wondering what he could do to pay respect to Cpl. Cirrillo, when an idea struck. He would stand as an Honour Guard in front of the cenotaph in Port Perry for a full day. He dressed in his legion uniform, with the blessing of the local branch president, and made his way to the Perry St. cenotaph to begin an all-day vigil. “I felt compelled to do this,” he explained, “as a patriotic duty to show we care in our community.” This isn’t the first time David has stood to honour Canada’s soldiers. He’s watched from an overpass, dressed in his Legion uniform 25 times, as soldiers killed in conflict made their way home along the Highway of Heroes. As a Sergeant-at-Arms for the local Royal Canadian Legion, David feels a special kindred ship with House of Commons Sergeant-at-Arms Keven Vickers, who shot and killed the assailant. “I’m proud to be here. It’s what I can do in remembrance,” he said. Story & Photos Courtesy of Peter Hvidsten - Focus on Scugog
