PORTAS PUBLIC MEETING!!! Come on news your opportunity to put forward good realistic ideas. Berwick Deserves Better has applied for electronic notice boards in town. Berwick’s Portas Management Group invite applications for funding The Portas Management Group in Berwick are inviting applications for Portas grant funding from any local business, community group or organisation within the community of Berwick upon Tweed who want to play a part in improving our town. To stimulate thoughts and to match groups to project ideas, the PMG have arranged an informal open evening on Thursday 9th October at 7pm in the William Elder Building to which all interested parties are invited. Beth Ward, Town Team Advisor for the North East, Yorkshire & Humber will be attending the meeting to offer advice and showcase ideas & projects from other Town Teams across the country. Beth says: The purpose of this meeting is not to tell the people of Berwick what they need, but it is to give advice and support to the local community to enable them to decide and manage projects they would like to see happening with the Portas money. I want to share best practice with the people of Berwick and hopefully it will act as a catalyst for groups to go away and be inspired to make a difference in Berwick. I did a similar presentation to community groups in East Riding & people came away from the meeting saying we could do something similar but with a local twist or we like that idea or that wouldnt work here but we could do x instead. The group will consider proposals that can help revitalise and rejuvenate Berwick’s Town Centre. Proposals should deliver tangible results, making a positive contribution to the local area and a vibrant, dynamic and inspiring future for Berwick as a market town that offers an authentic and varied shopping environment and visitor experience. Gayle Skelly, Chair of the Portas Management Group commented, “The team are really keen to see a strong mix of proposals come forward from a diverse range of sources, such as charitable organisations and collaborative groups, right through to partnerships and businesses. Ideally, we would like to have a mix of short term, quick fix projects that can be implemented in the next few months and ones with a longer term, strategic outlook. We will be prioritising funding on the main retail areas within the town centre from Castlegate down through Marygate and Hide Hill to Bridge Street – including side streets such as West Street, Church St and Woolmarket” Interested parties should contact Robert Leetham – Finance Officer at Berwick Town Council for a grant application form, guidelines and further details
