PORTIA UPDATE Portia arrived a couple of months ago now from Darebin Council. Her owners chose to surrender her at 15 years of age (no negative comments please). Ordinarily a dog like Portia wouldnt survive in the pound system, she would simply be euthanised. Fortunately, Darebin Council contacted us and how could we refuse such a gorgeous girl?! When we picked her up from the vet she was hysterical, she had just been plucked from the backyard she had known for the past 15years and put in the back of a car, something she clearly wasnt used to as the stress was obvious. She was very dirty and went straight to the hydrobath. We did the best we could as she had clearly never had a bath before - she was completely frantic. We got her home, she was hand shy, not used to touch and clearly had very little human attention. She was skin and bone, her coat dry, and a huge amount of dead hair needing to be brushed out. She got on fine with the dogs and wasnt bothered about the cats. But she paced and patrolled that backyard like you wouldnt believe. She wouldnt rest, wouldnt drink and initially wouldnt eat. At one point her foster dad found her curled up in the dirt in the rain, despite ample under cover areas, kennels and beds being available. Fast forward a few weeks and what a different dog we have! When she sees a human (Portia is deaf so you cant call her) she makes a beeline straight for them and with a flick of her head demands pats and attention, occasionally even attempting to jump up on them! She wolfs down her food, and while still well under what she should be, is putting on weight steadily. Her coat has become shiny but we are STILL brushing out dead hair - it doesnt matter how much we brush it just keeps coming - even in photography studio, there was hair EVERYWHERE! She is first at the back door when her humans arrive home and if you think youre shutting the door with her still outside think again, that head is wedged in the door and the door gets a flick and shes in! Last week we had a little photo shoot where Portia has perfected the German Shepherd look (she is supposed to be crossed with a Border Collie). Thank you to Samurai AV Photography for bringing out Portias beauty on camera.!
