POSSESSIONS AND MONEY ARE INHERENTLY DANGEROUS. In Luke 12:1-21, Lord Jesus Christ tells a parable that illustrates this point: And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”.........‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’...........So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” In a fallen world, money and possessions are inherently dangerous. The rich young man was blind to this fact. Brothers and sisters, we all agree that money can make life easier. It has the power to give us what we want. Therefore, human beings are constantly tempted to make an idol out of their wealth. Instead of trusting God’s power and goodness, we trust money’s power and our own goodness. We trust it for happiness and security. Instead of looking to God for satisfaction, we grow attached to our possessions and look to them for meaning and satisfaction. If you don’t believe me, just consider the hysteria which fills the newspapers when the stock market crashes or housing values plummet. The good example is the present status of our nation. So dangerous is money that Jesus Christ warned his disciples that rich people will have an extremely hard time getting into the kingdom of God. Listen to me properly here; not that they will not get into the Kingdom of God but it will be harder than it would be. More money means more temptation to abandon God and trust wealth. So, let examine ourselves. In which state are we? With Jesus Christ as our security or worthy as our security? Remember, Possessions are dangerous and Jesus Christ is not. He is life and eternal security and saviour. Amen.
