POST Commissioning Editor: Children (x2) (Salary scale code 300 – Position ID 60000912 & 60000907) Main Purpose of the position: To plan, commission and develop Children specific programmes of exceptional quality within mandate parameters resulting in high audience response and total adherence to mandate. Key Accountabilities: • Plan, budget and commission programmes to meet the network’s scheduling requirements • Provide effective input to the channel’s planning • Provide creative direction for the Network’s output • Take overall editorial responsibility for programmes, and ensure that programmes are delivered as commissioned and satisfy SABC editorial standards and Corporate policies • Establish and maintain effective relations with independent producers and industry bodies • Advise the independent production industry accordingly and ensure programmes comply with legal, contractual and copyright requirements • Work closely with the other SABC departments (research, marketing and sales) to maximise audience share and income generation • Ensure that commissioned programmes meets mandate targets • Ensure that the audiences are satisfied with Children programme offerings • Act as an editor/editorial advisor on programs for broadcast • Keeping abreast of industry trends locally and internationally • Provide creative input into the Children portfolio’s current programmes and in the conceptualization of new programmes • Cost effective compliance, utilization and management of allocated budget Requirements: • Degree in Communication/Media studies/Journalism or the equivalent • 3 – 5 years Experience in the Broadcasting environment • 2 Years experience in research, production and development • Knowledge of commissioning processes and the allocation of resources to reach objectives on time and within budget • A broad understanding of broadcast technology with specific knowledge of content in the Children’s genre • Strong editorial skills • Good project management skills and experience in managing projects • Ability to act on input from research and understand broadcast trends • Ability effectively work with independent producers • The ability to initiate and drive as well as organise, plan and control is critical to ensure efficient operations • A keen sense of deadlines is essential • Good communication skills at all levels • Ability to motivate and solve problem with a team • PC literacy is essential (Ms Word, Excel and Power Point) • Must be willing to travel • Valid driver’s licence • Integrity and Rigour • Creative flair Apply, with a concise CV to: The HR Manager: Television Email: [email protected] Closing Date: 14 March 2014 Preference will be given, but not limited to, candidates from designated groups in terms of the Employment Equity Act and the SABC’s Employment Equity initiatives.
