POST SUPREME COURT VERDICT AND MATTERS ARISING Ladies and - TopicsExpress

POST SUPREME COURT VERDICT AND MATTERS ARISING Ladies and Gentlemen of the media, we wish to join the trail by extending our heartfelt gratitude to the Supreme Court and the “nine wise men” of the Supreme Court for discharging such an enviable constitutional duty. There is no doubt about the fact that Democracy of this Country was put to another test. Whiles we celebrate our democracy, we also wish to commend President Mahama and Nana Akufu Addo for accepting the verdict of the Supreme Court. We particularly commend the President for his posture before, during and after the verdict. There is no doubt that as President his image and democratic credentials continues to fly high. Many political commentators have question the rationale behind praises on the NPP presidential hopeful but they forget that leaders wield power enough to manipulate and influence ordinary supporters and Nana Akufo Addo, having chosen to toe the path of democracy certainly deserve national commendation and we the Young Democrats in the name of good governance express our appreciation to Nana for choosing “progress” over “evil” However, there are inconsistencies in the posture of NPP after Nana Akufu Addo conceded defeat and congratulated President Mahama. While he has stated he will not seek a review, the General Secretary of the NPP Sir John stated the contrary. Mr. Sir John has stated on many platforms that, a three man committee has been set to study the verdict and possibly seek judicial review. This we think is sharp contradiction. Though it is within the constitutional right of the NPP, we wish to call on them to come clear. Nana Addo must speak again. It is also interesting to learn that, whiles Nana Addo wish to take a political vacation for some time, some leading members of NPP don’t think it is appropriate. Both the Western and Ashanti regional Chairmen of the NPP including Sir John have already posited and declared Nana Addo as the party Presidential candidate for 2016. This unfair and unreasonable position we find to be irrational, irresponsible, and corrupt, lack tenets of good governance and constitute dereliction of duty. As democrats we are certainly worried that the continuous stay in office of these personalities including the general Secretary of the NPP has the tendency of endangering party peace and democratic institutions that we desire to build as a country. Sir John should also realize that what he has done has eroded the confidence reposed and expected of him to reorganize all the party structures thereby conducting any free and fair elections for the party from polling station to flag-bearership. We think he should immediately resign as rule of law demands. We therefore condemn this uncivilized undemocratic behavior in no uncertain terms. What is happening to the NPP today is not good for the party, for society and the country’s democratic credentials. We therefore call on Nana Addo to impress upon the general secretary to resign if in deed he believe in the rule of law. Instead of war of words in the media between stalwards of the NPP jostling for position in the party after pronouncing the NPP losers of the 2012 elections, we humbly advise the party to do introspection and carefully evaluate the strategy of the party so that the party does not commit the mistakes in reorganizing their party.
