PHOTO | NATION PHOTOGRAPHER ADVERTISEMENT At least three houses were burnt down on Monday afternoon after militia raided Rhamu town in the clash-prone Mandera County. A security officer told Nation.co.ke that armed militia men raided the town of Rhamu – which has been calm after weeks of fighting – torching three houses. The officer said following the raid, police responded swiftly resulting in a heavy exchange of fire. He said security officers managed to repulse the militia, who could have caused more damage in the volatile Rhamu town. The officer, who declined to be named because he is not authorised to speak to the media, said the police undertook massive operation as a result of the raid by the militia. “We managed to recover an AK-47 and 29 rounds of ammunition in the operation which is still ongoing, and we are following leads we hope to recover more guns,” the officer said. The officer added that the police arrested more than 30 youth who are suspected to have taken part in the raid. More than 60 people have so far died, thousand displaced and property worth millions of shillings destroyed as a result of clan fights between two Somali communities of Degodia and Garre. (Read: One killed, two policemen injured in Mandera ambush ) This comes a day after security delegation led by the Cabinet secretary for Interior Joseph Ole Lenku and Inspector General of police David Kimaiyo visited the area in bid to bring a lasting solution to the clan fights.
