POTENTIAL FOR BLACK ICE TONIGHT & TOMORROW: Because black ice can form so quickly and is so camouflaged on the road, it is one of the deadliest of all winter driving hazards. Heres what to watch out for: • Pavement that looks dark, wet or like new asphalt. • Low-lying areas in the road that may have standing water or run off from nearby melting snow banks or puddles. These areas may even be at the TOP of the hill! • Bridges and Underpasses. • Any road areas which are shaded from the sun. • Any time the temperature is below 40 degrees F. • Vehicles that have slid off the road under any of the above conditions. Here are some tips on how to drive on black ice: 1. As soon as your car begins to slide on black ice, take your foot off the gas pedal. 2. Dont slam the brakes. This will only cause your car to lose control and slide even more. Tap the brake pedal lightly instead of pushing down hard on it. 3. Look for trouble spots ahead. 4. If your car does begin to skid on the ice, turn the wheel in the direction of the skid. This should help to steer your car back on the right track. 5. Leave plenty of space between your car and the other cars on the road. 6. Dont think youre invincible just because you drive a truck or a big sports utility vehicle. Be sure to wear your seatbelt. Winter driving is always unpredictable so be prepared for the unexpected and keep yourself safe! PLEASE DRIVE SAFELY!
