POTUS invites Amelia Boynton to be his special guest at tomorrows State of The Union address. Anyone who knows the grass roots history of the Selma March knows the key leadership role that Amelia Boynton played in organizing the insurgent voter registration drive of the people of Selma Alabama. Anyone who has seen Selma witnessed her role in this historic landmark event. Ms Boynton was a key leader in the more activist wing of the Selma branch NAACP. Ms Boynton was one of the hugely respected women of Selma that joined forces with the local chapter of Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to begin registering sharecroppers and tenant farmers in the Black majority counties of Alabama. The recently enacted 1957 Civil Rights Law had set up legal protocols that provided federal protection for citizens seeking the right to vote, most especially in those counties where white supremacists were using violence to terrify prospective Black voters. That meant that US marshals should have been deployed into these Mississippi and Alabama counties, as in other such Deep South counties. None of this new legislations was being enacted. Racial violence continued in full force with the total compliance of both the federal state public safety officers, never mind the active participation of the local KKK infested county police departments perpetuating the violence with total impunity. Ms Boynton and the SNCC civil rights activists organized to register said voters were literally getting fired from their local jobs. They were beated, jailed, torched, and lynched. These radical activists were resolved that they needed to NOW call in bigger forces. After much argument, they decided to call in Dr King and his SCLC forces to hopefully provide more sacrificial blood sweat and tears. Ms Boynton was one of the strongest advocates with sufficient gravitas that effectively argued for bringing in Dr. King. She was severely beaten, nearly to her death in the first march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Tomorrow night, at the very special invite of President Obama, Amelia Boynton, age 103, will be in attendance at The State of the Union Speech. POTUS got this one right. Praises. Baruche Aschem.
