POV from a child of the 50s..... the reason that fewer and fewer houses welcome trick or treaters, let alone decorate for the occasion, is a fading of trust.....trust that those who live in the visited houses are good people...trust that those who knock on the doors dont have evil motives.....trust in a night that sees parents driving their kids around to hit and run their way to candy nirvana...trust that we can send our 13 year olds out into the night and not have the police show up at our doors saying theyve been killed by a hit and run driver....trust that the neighbors that we dont know at all are as trustworthy as the neighbors we know....and..ultimately....trust in the idea that its a good idea to trust at all.....Ebola is a temporary problem soon to be solved....the virus that is destroying trust is the far less discussed but far more insidious......
