POW! Well thats a familiar sound. Before I even looked outside I went into the laundry room, grabbed the laundry basket and headed out the back door and there he was, a common starling (bird) laying there trying to catch his breath. This happens at least once a week where a bird slams into one of the windows and stuns himself. Rarely, do I see a bird ever die when this happens. He just needs a few minutes, sometimes a couple of hours to catch his breath and get strong enough to fly away. I stopped picking up slamming birds and putting them in a box and going into OMGosh rescue mode a long time ago. A little calmness and patience is all that is needed. If the ground was super cold, icy or snowy then I would have put him in a box and brought him inside until I heard him moving around. But in this case, I just put the laundry basket over the bird as he panted and struggled to catch his breath. The laundry basket is keep any bird of prey from swooping down and having the struggling starling for breakfast. Not even 20 minutes later I went outside and saw the bird standing up trying to fly out of its mock cage. I lifted up the laundry basket and off he went. So FYI folks, just a few minutes is usually all these stunned birds need and for you to give them enough time to get a grip and catch their breath.
