POWER OUTAGE IN PENRSOE, MT WELLINGTON & ELLERSLIE Fire crews in Auckland have almost finished the job of putting out a large blaze at a sub-station, which has blacked out parts of the city. The fire in Penrose was first spotted not long after 2am, and around 30 firefighters have been dealing with it. Transpower says people in Penrose, Mt Wellington and Ellerslie have been cut off, and the fire is in a cable trench belonging to the lines company Vector. Vector spokeswoman Sandy Hodge says once crews have tamed the fire, they can start to assess how to fix the fault. They can evaluate the damage and begin repairs but at this stage its really difficult to ascertain what the cause of the fire was or an estimated time of restoration until that evaluation is complete. Fire Service spokeswoman Dallas Ramsay says specialist foam is being brought in to help douse the flames. Around about 30 firefighters in attendance, thats including pumping appliances and the specialist appliances like a foam tender and the command unit. Ramsay says theres no information yet on what caused it. We are remaining there. Weve got utilising foam deliveries and at this stage weve extinguished some of the fire. The power blackout is affecting mostly the east of the city. Its also hit some internet servers and affected email traffic.
