PR currently runs 47 passenger trains (maybe be less or more by a couple of trains). Its punctuality hit 10 % last year due to failing locomotives. Currently it has 50% according to this newspaper article. But what does 50% percent mean ? It means that if a train does not reach its destination on time it will be included among the trains that have lost punctuality. The numbers of hours by which it has been delayed is not proportionately included in the total tally. Secondly, the challenge of making 46 trains reach 50% punctuality with a hundred barely working locomotives when PRs total trains were once in the hundreds with 500 locomotives or so is no turn around achievement. Thirdly, comparisons with the worst period in PRs history is not a healthy comparison. Finally, we have to take their word for it as their is no third party verifying these statistics. Though PR states that they have reached such and such revenue target it is immaterial if no mention is made of expenditure. For example, if the target was 24 billion, what about the difference with our total budget i.e. 53.5 billion ? This excludes the 15-20 billion given for projects. The actual difference is in the operating to expenditure ratio which was slightly above 200 % last years and is now slightly below 200%. The claim of public satisfaction and confidence is not based on any study or research which PR doesnt know how to conduct. How is that statement made? Having travelled on PRs main train from Lahore to Karachi and back a couple of times there were delays, inconveniences, problems like lack of hygienic food etc. Where and who has said that they are satisfied by Railways performance ?
