PRAY FOR THE SOUL OF UROMI, THE HEADQUARTERS OF ESAN NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE, NIGERIA. =========================================== Fresh elections in Esan North East Local Government Area (ENELGA) of Edo state will be holding Tuesday, October 22, 2013. An election held a few months back this year failed owing to the battle royal of the titans (APC and PDP). Consequently of all the 18 LGAs in Edo state, only ENELGA has no sitting chairman and other elective office holders. With all sense of humility and responsibility, I would like to mention here that Uromi is the hometown of some highly placed Nigerians: Catholic Cardinal Olubunmi Okojie, Chairman, PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, Honourable Works Minister, Arch. Mike Onolememe, Air Vice Marshal (Rtd) Joe Okoye, Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Dr Okojie etc. A TRIBUTE TO UROMI, THE LAND OF MY NATIVITY. =================================== Precious People =========== Exactly a century ago, a missionary left the cosy comforts of civilisation, hazarded his life through the perils of a long, tortuous and tempestuous voyage to dark & benighted Africa. He found himself in a sleepy and rustic community in Edo state of Nigeria, labouring tirelessly and paying a heavy price to bring down the blessings of God on the community. That community is the great Uromi city of today. If I get my history right, the advent of this missionary marked the maiden hoisting and unfurling of the Gospel banner and thus the beginning of Gospel evangelism in the whole of Ishan land. This is the spiritual, strategic & dispensational location or allocation of Uromi in Gods great plan. Peculiar People ========== It is therefore a self fulfilling prophecy that the town is so peculiar in Esan land in many respects. (1). Her offspring are most industrious and enterprising (2). It is a highly literate community. (3). Uromians are very brave and valiant for the right. (4). They are very protective of strangers, visitors, the less fortunate, the weak/elderly, women and children. The Yorubas, Ibos, Hausa/Fulanis, and other tribes have settled and lived happily and prosperously in the community for several decades running, marrying (our people) and giving in marriage. Uromis love for strangers is legendary. (5) They are lovers of peace (6). They are very venturesome in nearly every field of human endeavour. (7). They have very strong family values. Our womenfolk are exceptionally industrious and among the best homebuilders in the world. (8) Uromi is the commercial rendezvous/nerve centre of Ishan land. Prosperous People ============= The community brandishes and parades an amazing and endless list of outstanding men/women who have excelled in their fields of endeavours - Renowned pastors/cardinal/bishops, pilots, professors, politicians, propounders of theorems, scientists, great mathematicians, educationists, chartered accountants/bankers/administrators, eminent lawyers, management gurus, business magnates - name it. This land has produced exceptionally intelligent sons & daughters. Though many of her brightest have been cut down in their prime, yet the Finger that moves the universe has steered the town through such afflictions and ensured that she fills and fulfils her place of destiny in our nation and beyond our national frontiers.. Her sons and daughters are great voyagers and can be found in far flung places of the earth, in nearly every land and clime, probably even in the land of the midnight sun, all in search of the golden fleece. And they are never forgetful to touch base with their roots, their fatherland. They are keenly interested in the goings-on in their town. The local government elections coming up Tuesday, October 22, 2013 is on their front burner. Powerful Politics =========== Isnt it curious that of all the 18 Local Government Areas in Edo state, Esan North East Local Government with Uromi as the headquarters, is the only one without elected officers due to an inconclusive election. Great and powerful forces are battling for the soul of Uromi, in the physical and unseen realm because she holds a strategic place in the scheme of things in the state and the nation. Prayer Project =========== Pray for the soul of Uromi. Pray for free, fair, peaceful and credible elections in our dear land.
