Ned, Laura and Coral have all recently lost their partners, Natasha has an on-again, off-again relationship and Sebastian is looking for as many partners as he can have. Throughout the show there are the folk dance performances by the cast, both inelegant and sophisticated. A Shortcut To Happiness is about discovering the ways of a new country, accepting differences, finding love and dancing your way to happiness. A profile of the character requirements: • Natasha: (30 Plus) Natasha is a Russian immigrant who makes money cleaning and teaching dancing while trying to improve her English so she can become a music teacher. Natasha attempts and often gets wrong common Kiwi phrases, such as “from the bottom of my heart” being “from my bottom to my heart”. • Ned: (Late 50s, early 60s) Ned is a widowed retired accountant who has to fend off the approaches of the women in the show. He is adjusting to retirement and life on his own, but hes very comfortable with his way of life. All that changes with his offer to sort out the financial woes of Natasha. A new world of possibilities opens up for Ned as he sees these strange creatures called Kiwis through foreign eyes. • Coral: (40 plus - attractive) Coral, the middle aged man-eater, has designs on Ned. She is recently widowed and moved into an apartment in a new neighbourhood. She is lonely and joined the class to meet people. • Janet: (40 plus) Friend of Laura – wife of Tony. Attempting to find another partner for Laura so Laura won’t be the odd one out, but mainly so she doesn’t feel guilty about continuing to have the holidays and golfing, etc. • Laura: (40s plus) Recently widowed. Before her husband Colin died, she and Janet and their husbands did everything together: holidays, golfing, bridge, trips abroad. • Bev: (60s) chronic-class-taker. As soon as the dance class is over, she and Ray are off to another activity they have joined. Committed to self improvement. • Ray: (60s) chronic-class-taker. Rather henpecked by Bev and has an eye for the ladies. Committed to self improvement. • Sebastian: (50s – English) Outgoing, fit, charming, a bit of a cad – women find him attractive.
