PREACHER’S COLUMN For NOVEMBER 23, 2014 S. Trail Church of Christ Sarasota Fla. “A DAY OF THANKSGIVING” In his classic novel Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe offers some good advice by what Crusoe does almost immediately on the deserted island. Crusoe sits down to make a list. On one hand, he writes down all his problems, and on the other side, he wrote down all his blessings. On one side, “I do not have any clothes. On the other side, “But it’s warm and I don’t really need any.” Then, “All the provisions were lost.” But, “There’s plenty of fresh fruit and water on the island.” Down the list with a definite blessing listed to counter every perceived problem. Rather than find himself on an “island of despair” he discovered that he was well cared for by the provisions God gave. How our attitudes are changed into a positive frame, when we count our blessings. Whatever comes our way, there is ample provision to counter and bless, if we open our eyes to see them. Make a list of your blessings. Remember the powerful words of the song written by Johnson Oatman - Verse 1 --“ When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.” Verse 2 -- “Are you ever burdened with a load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear? Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly, And you will be singing as the days go by.” Verse 3 -- “So, amid the conflict, whether great or small, Do not be discouraged, God is over all; Count your many blessings, angels will attend, Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.” God is so good, all the time! Would everyone know your faith is in God by your attitude daily? Or would your face lead someone to doubt whether you know God is in control at all times? Put God into the picture, and you will be singing as the day goes by! (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) Pastor Terry Chapman
