PREMIER RUFUS EWING AND DONHUE GARDINER IN ST. VINCENT FOR CARICOM MEETING Premier Dr. Rufus Ewing and Minister of Immigration and Border DonHue Gardiner are presently attending the 25th Inter-sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) which is being held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The meeting, which will see some eighteen countries throughout the Caribbean region represented, will focus especially on Information and Community Technology and how it can contribute to development, human resource development and the sustainable growth and development of regional economies. Among those Heads of Government present, and of particular interest to the Turks and Caicos Islands, will be the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, Perry Christie, who, it is anticipated, will also be presenting on the situation in the Turks and Caicos Islands particularly as it relates to the state of governance, border control and Illegal Immigration and the progress on the rejuvenation of our economy. Premier Ewing met recently with Prime Minister Christie recently, while attending a Tourism Conference in Nassau, The Bahamas last month. During this meeting the Prime Minister, whose Government led a fact-finding mission to the Turks and Caicos Islands last June, 2013 after being charged with assessing the state of affairs in the UK Overseas Territory, was briefed by Premier Ewing on the progress to date on the state of Governance and Democracy in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Also on the agenda was the preceding deliberation of recommendations to be laid by the Council for Finance and Planning (COFAP) and that of the Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), which both had a focus on sustainable growth and economic development of the Member States of CARICOM. These preceding meetings took place on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Among the other key topics to be discussed during the two-day summit will be the RULING OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC CONSTITUTIONAL COURT ON NATIONALITY; CRITERIA FOR MEMBERSHIP AND ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP; BORDER ISSUES, AND; THE REPARATIONS FOR NATIVE GENOCIDE AND SLAVERY. The eighteen countries currently represented in CARICOM comprise of the 15 Member States: Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. The Turks and Caicos Islands is just one of five Associated Member States, with the others being Anguilla, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, and the Cayman Islands.
