::: PREMIERSHIP RUGBY TO BENEFIT IN T/O BID FOR TAHS ::: NSW Premiership and community Rugby is set to benefit to the tune of $2M a year over 5 years if a takeover bid for the Waratahs succeeds. The proposal, by a consortium led by former Wallaby coach Bob Dwyer and RAT and former ARU Chairman DILIP KUMAR, is one of two currently on the table. A rival group led by businessmen David Levy and Michael Hendler were the first to put forward a private equity proposal to the Waratahs franchise. The Waratahs current licensing arrangement, negotiated in 2009 officially expires at the of 2015. While both bids have outlined a desire to strengthen the ties between the Waratahs and grassroots rugby, Dwyers group is the first it would seem to publicly commit a number to the funding proposal. Dwyer revealed that his group intend to inject $2M per year over five years to the development of NSW Premiership, Community and NSW Country rugby. Our plan is to spend virtually all our money with the clubs and community, helping them develop best practice in a number of areas, Dwyer told SMHs Georgina Robinson in an interview yesterday. We believe if we do that, well grow the Waratahs brand because this will be about the Waratahs helping clubs to help themselves, which will get more players better prepared and coming through the system to be available for the Waratahs. An independent panel has been appointed by the NSWRU and ARU to assess both groups bids and recommend a preferred candidate. The ARU and NSWRU must both agree to the changes to the Waratahs licensing arrangement before it can be ratified and a new partnership is approved.
