PREPARATION: Advent Week 2 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written by Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’” Mark 1:1-3 If you have ever had the privilege of being around a first time expectant mommy or possibly been one yourself you know that near the end of the final trimester they go through a nesting phase. They wake up at odd hours to wash dishes that have already been washed, vacuum floors that have already been vacuumed, dust furniture that has no need of been dusted because it was done three times already in the last three hours. They pack and repack their suitcase thats going to the hospital, they go into the room where the bassinet is awaiting the new arrival and make sure that some mysterious guest hasnt ruffled the sheets, they rearrange and rehang the pictures on the wall, they fold and refold the already neatly folded onesies and by all means the little booties cannot be out of place. What is this strange and unusual phenomenon that takes control of the new mommy to be? In its simplest form they cannot resist making sure that when they return home with the most beautiful little bundle, its new home is prepared. If you have ever had the occasion to be around a bride to be or possibly been one yourself you know that the last week before the wedding is somewhat like watching the Tasmanian devil at his finest. The list is exceedingly long and there can be no room for last minute glitches. The dress must be in perfect condition, the cake must have precisely the right decorations on it, the flowers must be exactly the right colors, the bridesmaids dresses must come from the same pattern, the candelabra must be perfectly adorned, the right songs, the right lighting, the right, the right, the right, and the list goes on until the last nerve is being strummed like a fine tuned Stradivarius and emotions are representative of a tidal wave. Even though these plans have been in active mode for six months or better, when its close to the time of presenting herself as a bride adorned for her husband there can be absolutely nothing left to chance. What is this strange and unusual phenomenon that takes possession of this beautiful creation? In its simplest form she cannot resist making sure the day she says I DO is the most beautiful day of both their lives. It all must be prepared. No one does anything that is life changing or life rearranging without first preparing for it. He is coming, it wont be long and the world will be introduced to the babe who spoke and worlds were formed, who batted his eye and lightning flashed, who breathed and life began. It wont be long before its our chance to hold the hand who flung the stars into space, who scooped out the canyons and traced the rivers through the valleys with his finger. It wont be long before we are honored with the presence of royalty, the rose of Sharon, the lily of the valley, and who might this wonder of wonders be? Its the one who chose to travel through the restrictive, dark birth canal of a virgin to bring us opportunity to know what real, fulfilling, complete life is all about.
