PRESIDENT JONATHAN SHARES HIS OPINION ON WASHINGTON POST: ITS TIME TO SWING INTO ACTION: A MEMO TO GEJ Dear President Goodluck Jonathan, I just saw the views you shared on the the insurgency in Nigeria and the Chibok issue. Since Public Relations is about doing and telling as well as telling and doing, my take is that these statements be matched with action. SEARCHING FOR A SOLUTION, RATHER THAN SPEAKING ABOUT IT: 1. We need to look for an alternative route to counter-insurgency since it appears that there are moles for the insurgents in the Military. (I have ideas on this which I do not want to share in the open) 2. We need to set up a special unit on homeland security (call it national guard if, you like, and then expand the scope of the DSS and the NIA on counter-insurgency intelligence so they can break the rank of the insurgents. 3. We need to have an information hub on the insurgency dedicated to releasing timely information on security threats and retrieving and processing similar information from the field. We also need a victims management centre, so victims of terrorism act can be better managed and government can be seen as providing care and assistance. HISTORY TELLS US, GREAT LEADERS HAVE ARISEN IN TIMES OF CRISIS: Mr. President. I know you did not bring this upon your government, as no President would crave crisis knowing the impact of crisis on peace and development, but in history, we know that crisis has thrown up great leaders whose names are etched in the sands of time: A. Dwight D. Eisenhower: Even with his health challenges, he helped to end the second world war. As commander in chief of the U.S Army, he rallied the troops to victory at the battle of Normandy, he brokered the truce in Korea and worked during his two terms to ease the tensions of the Cold War. B. Charles de Gaulle: He led the Free French Forces and put together a government in exile against Frances pro-German Vichy government and participated in the liberation of Paris. Despite Frances initial defeat by Germany, he rallied international support for the eventual victory against the Germans. C. Sir Winston Churchill: Born into an aristocratic family, he took on the challenge of confronting the Hitler and liberating, not just Britain but the entire Europe during World War II. Overcoming speech impediment, he rose to become one of the greatest orators ever produced by the world. PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN, YOU CAN DO SAME: Mr. President, both Eisenhower and de Gaulle, were born in 1890 so they were about your age when they took on the task of liberating their countries in the early 1940s. You can do same. I know there may be conspiracies playing out in this insurgency. I know there are a host of people who want your job and are not relenting in their efforts, but you need to show leadership now, as it is desired more than ever. You need to lead the change Nigerians desire and instil confidence in government. You need to convince the cynics that the battle over corruption is not a lost battle and that every Nigerian- whether big or small - really counts in your growth and development agenda. I love your article, but I also need you to speak to Nigerians, not through the tube or on the pages of newspapers, but on the streets, in towns and villages battered by the insurgents. You need to brace-up to the challenges that confront you and show to Nigerians that it can be surmounted. God bless you Sir. washingtonpost/opinions/goodluck-jonathan-nothing-is-more-important-than-bringing-home-nigerias-missing-girls/2014/06/26/7739275e-fd4b-11e3-b1f4-8e77c632c07b_story.html
