PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN - FIRESIDE CHAT #12 The First Amendment to the United States Constitution declares in unambiguous terms, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Yet the Pentagon now warns American servicemen that they can be punished for contributing to or belonging to Christian organizations. I believe that the officials who promulgate such policy should be discharged from service, dishonorably, be they whom they may be, even if they be the commander-in-chief. How dare the miscreants in uniform disgrace it by countermanding the document they swore to defend. Not one degree of tolerance should be applied to anyone responsible for such an outlandish curtailment of the rights of the men who volunteered to defend the rights and freedom of all of us. If elected, I would enact measures to assure that such vile abuses be ceased, and that the abusers be immediately removed from all posts of responsibility over others, to be dishonorably discharged under terms to be defined. There is no question that their procedure is dishonorable. Any questions?
