PRESS RELEASE - RETAIL THEFT January 9, 2015 In 2014, the Easton Police Department saw an increase in retail theft. The Easton Police Department investigated approximately 163 retail theft cases in 2013. In 2014, approximately 263 investigations were reported; a 61% increase. In response to this increase, the Easton Police Department announced that they will be releasing each month, photographs of all individuals that were charged with retail theft. There is an understanding that to better prosecute and deter thefts, a partnership between retailers and Law Enforcement is vital. In August 2013, the Easton Police Department also started a Retail Investigator’s Network, which brings Loss Prevention/Asset Protection Investigators, Prosecutors and Law Enforcement together from Easton and Denton. During these meetings, solved and unsolved investigations are discussed, which has increased closure rates in Easton and Denton. These meetings have opened lines of communications between retailers, which didn’t exist before. These meetings are also used to educate everyone in current crime trends and other criminal activity that’s associated with retail theft. In 2014, Loss Prevention/Asset Protection Investigators and Law Enforcement in Easton and Denton have saved retailers, approximately $142,722.00. This figure was generated based on individuals that were apprehended for retail theft and does not include unsolved investigations. This figure also comes from a small group of retailers, not all in Talbot and Caroline County, which could potentially double. The monetary cost in time investigated, court, and loss in merchandise is a figure difficult to establish.
