PRESS RELEASE: 12 AUGUST 2013 George Premier League 7s return to Outeniqua Park in December Picturesque Outeniqua Park will again come to life during the weekend of 13-14 December 2013 with the return of the very popular George Premier League 7s tournament. Now in its second year, this unique tournament will again see some world stars, famous brands and heart-stopping action as sevens rugby returns to this popular Southern Cape venue. Defending champions Samurai will be back to try and secure the R1 million winning purse and will again have to fend off the likes of Super Rugby stars, the Toyota Cheetahs, and a new challenger in the form of the Serevi Select, an American-based team run by world sevens legend Waisale Serevi. Regulars from last year to return will be the Vodacom Blue Bulls, Sharks and the very popular Living Ball team, stacked with former international players. Tournament promoter, Willem Strauss, confirmed that soccer giants Kaizer Chiefs will once again enter a team. “Chiefs brought an incredible hype to the tournament last year and their presence will contribute to bringing supporters from both sport codes together in a unique celebration of South African sport”. He also confirmed that the Kaizer Chiefs management team will once again consist of Gcobani Bobo, Breyton Paulse and Makaya Ntini. Chances are good that another famous sports team from outside the traditional rugby environment will be joining this fun-filled weekend that combines sport and entertainment in a spectacular way, tournament promoter Willem Strauss said on Monday at the launch of the event. “This year’s George Premier League 7s will be bigger and better than last year, with extra teams, new names and faces adding to the already guaranteed top class action on the field,” Strauss said. “We will again have the massive prize money for teams to chase, but will also see the emergence of new faces. Five players from last year’s tournament were picked for the Springbok Sevens team afterwards and four more drafted into the squad, which is testimony of the quality of player that will be on offer.” The South African Super Rugby franchises have been invited again and Toyota Cheetahs CEO, Harold Verster, confirmed that his team wants to go one better in 2013. “We were losing finalists last year and we have learned some valuable lessons from that. Our team has performed very well in Super Rugby this year and I am convinced that we can bring some of that momentum and confidence to George this year.” The Toyota Cheetahs included the likes of Raymond Rhule, Sarel Pretorius and Johan Sadie last year but will probably be even stronger this year. Hosting president, Hennie Baartman was equally confident of another stellar event. “The SWD Eagles will enter a team this year, so we are very excited about that, as we have some top class players in our midst. There will also be a club competition running adjacent to the George Premier League 7s, which will spur on local interest and support. We cannot wait to again host a world class event at Outeniqua Park,” Baartman said. Ticketing information and more team announcements will be made in due course.
