PRESS RELEASE 23 November 2014 Outrage over governments plan to weaken protection for farm animals Cattle and sheep could be THROWN, DROPPED, KICKED AND PUNCHED while calves and lambs continue to be BURNT AND MUTILATED WITH NO PAIN RELIEF. Mark Pearson, Party Secretary states: New Standards and Guidelines ready to be endorsed by Australian governments will bring an inexcusable drop in the welfare requirements by which cattle and sheep are treated. These standards will be lower than international OIE recommendations; considered to be the minimum acceptable standards, including for third world countries. Young animals, such as calves and lambs less than six months of age will continue to suffer excruciating pain from holes burnt into their skulls (de-budding) and mutilation (castration, mulesing and tail docking) without pain relief despite the overwhelming proof that they feel pain just as intensely, if not more, than mature animals. What are currently forbidden practices; such as throwing, dropping, punching and kicking animals will be allowed under these new guidelines. Even greater levels of brutal animal abuse will be permitted. This is unconscionable! Steve Garlick, President states: Just as live exports and mulesing have caused an international disgrace for Australia – both Liberal and Labor governments are obviously hell bent on ensuring Australia is seen as having some of the worst animal welfare standards in the world. No fair-minded Australian would ethically and morally want to be part of this international condemnation. The Animal Justice Party calls on all governments and politicians to reject these proposed standards immediately. The Animal Justice Party will be standing candidates in the upcoming NSW and Victorian elections. We will herald a voice for animal well-being and against animal abuse in the halls of parliaments. We are standing in Victoria in all upper house seats and in the lower house seats of South Barwon, Melbourne, Richmond, Brunswick, Northcote, Prahran, Forest Hill, Bayswater and Monbulk.
