PRESS RELEASE 30 – OPPOSITION QUESTIONS FHL TERMINATIONS by fijioppschambers MEDIA STATEMENT [30/12/2014] Opposition Member of Parliament and former Fiji Television Limited Board Member Aseri Radrodro is querying the decision by Fijian Holdings Limited Chairman and Chief Executive Officer to terminate the contracts of the Fiji Television Limited Chief Executive Officer Tevita Gonelevu and its Head of Content Tanya Waqanika. In a statement, Honorable Radrodro states that the appointment of Mr Gonelevu to Head Fiji TV in particular was approved by the Board of FHL in August 2013. “The appointment of Mr Gonelevu was made as a part of Fijian Holdings Limited’s job rotation and enhancement for senior Management as he was the FHL General Manager Investment at the time. Mr Gonelevu’s appointment was one of the six promotions that were recommended by the FHL Chief Executive Officer Nouzab Fareed to the Board which was approved.” Honorable Radrodro said. Fiji TV is a subsidiary company of FHL and a major shareholder after the acquisition of Yasana Holdings Limited by FHL. Honorable Radrodro stated that shareholders have to take the necessary FHL officials to task on the decisions which is uncalled for. “The question is, as a private entity, there are rules and regulations that a company has to follow and therefore a company has to facilitate the principles of natural justice as has been done with previous office holders of Fijian Holdings Limited. Hon Radrodro questioned the motive behind Mr Gonelevu’s termination by the CEO, and said he was unconvinced that this is part of the ‘ongoing restructure’ as claimed by Nouzab Fareed. Hon Radrodro said Mr Gonelevu was doing well in FHL at the time he was directed to go to Fiji TV and from all accounts he was making progress in Fiji TV as well and now he is terminated,” On what grounds was he terminated Hon Radrodro asked. “This has to be clarified and the general public in particular the shareholders have to demand to know on what grounds have these terminations occurred?” Honorable Radrodro said. Hon Radrodro said there were cases of far more serious breaches in FHL, yet those involved were not terminated. Why in this case? Hon Radrodro said Fiji TV was operating under very difficult and unfair trading conditions with the 6 month license being imposed on it by the Attorney General. This was commercial blackmail and despite the time he has had in the position, it would appear that CEO Fareed has failed to correct this very important issue. So what’s his punishment? These kind of dictatorial and unfair practices victimize workers and cast a dark day over the supposed independence of Boards and Management of Institutions such as Fiji TV.
