PRESS RELEASE 68/13 For Immediate Release July 08, 2013 SAINT LUCIA PREPARES FOR STORM In light of the Hurricane Warning issued by the Hewanorra Meteorological Office, the Government of Saint Lucia wishes to advise that all schools will be closed at 12:00 PM , today, Monday, July 8, 2013. Schools are to remain closed until Wednesday morning, unless the Government of Saint Lucia advises otherwise. According to Tropical Storm Chantal Advisory number 3, "AT 08:00 AM. TODAY, THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM CHANTAL WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 10.6 DEGREES NORTH...LONGITUDE 50.6 DEGREES WEST, OR ABOUT700 MILES OR 1126 KILOMETRES EAST SOUTHEAST OF ST. LUCIA. CHANTAL IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST NEAR 26 MPH OR 43 KM/H AND A WEST-NORTHWESTWARD MOTION AT ABOUT THE SAME FOWARD SPEED IS EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. ON THIS FORECAST TRACK THE CENTER OF CHANTAL SHOULD PASS IN THE VICINITY OF ST. LUCIA EARLY TUESDAY MORNING. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 40 MPH OR 65 KM/H, WITH HIGHER GUSTS. SOME INCREASE IN STRENGT IS FORECAST, DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS." Therefore, all are asked to continue to monitor the system. Fishermen have been advised to remain on port and secure their equipment. Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, is expected to chair a pre- strike meeting of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) at 10:00am today. Meanwhile, the public is advised to take all necessary steps to prepare for the storm which is expected to affect Saint Lucia sometime tomorrow morning. The Prime Minister will issue a further statement later today. End.
