PRESS RELEASE: 8th Micronesian Games to be held in Pohnpei, 19 to 29 July 2014 . July 8, 2013 at 4:03pm FSM National OlympicOffice - Kolonia, Pohnpei - 4 July 2013 Preparations are now underway for hosting of the 8thMicronesian Games which will be hosted by Pohnpei State during July of2014. It is anticipated that more than1,200 men and women athletes from all of the Micronesian jurisdictions (theMarshall islands, Nauru, Kiribati, Kosrae, Chuuk, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Yap and Palau will be visiting Pohnpei to compete in at least thirteen sports, including: Athletics (Track& Field), Baseball, Basketball, Outrigger Canoe Racing, Softball, Micronesia All-Around, Spearfishing, Swimming, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis,Volleyball, Weightlifting, and Wrestling. A fourteenth sport, Football (Soccer) is under consideration to be included if enough teams are interested to play and a playing field can be prepared in time. The ten days of the 8thMicronesian Games will begin with an Opening Ceremony on Sunday July 19, and the closing Ceremony to be conducted on Wednesday, July 29. Preparations for renovation of the sports venues are underway, with the Pohnpei Swimming Pool already completed. For the most part, the same venues as were used for the 5th Micronesian Games, which were hosted by Pohnpei State in 2002, will be utilized. Pohnpei Lt. Governor Marcelo K. Peterson is serving as the Chairman of the Games Organizing Committee and the various sub-committee chairs are now are being recruited. Many of these individuals participated in a Games Management Seminar which was conducted 2-4 July 2013, which was facilitated by Mr. Andrew Minogue, the Executive Director of the Pacific Games Council. Mr. Minogue has many years of games management experience from the Olympic level to the Pacific Mini Games level and provided a great deal of valuable information during the workshop.
