PRESS RELEASE ACIC’s HISTORIC INDUCTION OF IMAM, PANDIT & PASTOR INTO ITS HONORARY MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM IMO of Toronto Canada, Al Haj Omar Farouk honored at Special Event The Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC) and The Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman (GUSIA) created history on Friday last, when an Imam, a Pandit and a Pastor were given the prestigious Honorary Membership to the ACIC at a Special Program which was also held to honor the visiting President of the International Muslims’ Organization (IMO) of Toronto Canada, Al Haj Omar Farouk. Imam Haleem Khan (Noel), Pandit Deodatt Tillack and Pastor Ronald Mc Garrell, who were described as great friends to the ACIC and as dedicated persons in the Guyanese community for religious cohesiveness, joined the selected group to receive this honorary membership to Guyana’s most famous Islamic Center. They join the list of Honorary Members which includes Prime Minister of Guyana, Samuel hinds and Opposition Leader David Granger, as well as leading Muslim and non-Muslim personalities from Guyana and more than twenty other countries across the world who have received this membership before. Imam Haleem Khan is the Imam of the Meten Meer Zorg (East) Masjid and has been working along with several non-profit groups both in and out of Guyana, providing charitable programs for the Guyanese community. He heads ACIC’s Free funeral transportation Service, which over the years has provided free funeral transportation for hundreds of persons of all faiths and ethnic background. Pastor Ronald Mc Garrell is the Chairman of the inter Religious Organization of Guyana (IRO) and head of the Family Federation of Guyana as well as Head of Joshua House for Children. He is an international Ambassador of Peace and serves on several Government Boards in this country. Pandit Deodat Tillack is a member of the IRO and is a clinical psychologist apart from being a Hindu priest at the Shri Samayapuran Mariamma Temple. The recepients all expressed their great appreciation for the Honorary Membership to ACIC and stated their pleasure in being associated with this Complex, which leads in its activities and programs for both Muslims and non-Muslims. Hajji Roshan Khan, Sis. Raheema Rahaman (Dolly) and Bro. Abdool Azeez (Toeze) were also given the Honorary Membership to the Complex at the said program. President of Toronto’s largest Muslim Center—the International Muslims’ Organization, Al Haj Omar Farouk, in whose honor the program was held, lauded the work of ACIC in the promotion of Islam as a religion of tolerance, love, peace and respect for other religions. In his featured remarks, he acknowledged the work of ACIC has been receiving recognition from both the muslim and non-Muslim communities in Guyana and overseas and express his organization’s pleasure in working alongside ACIC for the development of the Muslim community and the wider Guyanese community. President General of ACIC, Hakeem Khan stated that ACIC has shared a relationship with IMO that spans over fifteen (15) years and during that time, has collaborated with IMO for many programs and projects. He welcomed Al Haj Farouk to ACIC and Guyana and pledged ACIC’s continued commitment to the relationship of the Muslims of Guyana and Canada. Also attending the program was Secretary of Imdadul Islamic Center of Toronto Canada, Bro. Osman Khan who expressed his pleasure at what he has seen in the development of ACIC. He committed his center to further support to Guyana through ACIC and especially the Muslim community of West Demerara (where his late father, Al Haj Shameer Khan is considered as one of the pioneers of Islam in this region). Guyanese born Poet, now based in New York, Nazir Khan (Tally) attended the event and shared one of his famous poems taken from his book “Save the Tears”. Canada’s based international Female qaseeda Singer, Nazeema Hussain also graced the program and sang one of her famous compositions. Also attending and participating in the program was another Imam from Toronto, Imam Hajji Mohamed Ali (Nashur) who hails from Anna Catherina but now resides in Canada. Mohamed Shahid and young Irshad Khan also sand qaseedas at the program with the Tazeem done beautifully by Bro. Osman Khan. ACIC / SADR recently secured an alliance with Popular Radio/TV Host, Trinidadian born Richard Aziz, for the airing of their programs and activities from Guyana in Toronto, Canada. The alliance will also allow for the airing of Aziz’s programs on the organizations TV & Radio programs in Guyana. ACIC is the leading Muslim cultural group in Guyana and the home of international cooperation between Guyanese Muslims and the rest of the world.
