PRESS RELEASE Ambedkar followers thrilled on the purchase of Ambedkar house in London The followers of Dr BR Ambedkar are thrilled to hear the news of reaching a deal by the Government of Maharashtra to purchase the London house where he stayed during his studies at the London School of Economics in 1921-22. The Federation of Ambedkarite and Buddhist Organisations UK (FABOUK) stepped in to purchase the 2,050 sq ft property on King Henry’s Road, London and convert into an Ambedkar memorial. The proposal was sent to the government of Maharashtra and the Government of India. Santosh Dass MBE, President, FABOUK said, “I am delighted that the Government of Maharashtra has begun the legal process to secure the chief architect of the constitution of India, Dr Ambedkar’s former residence in North London. This follows FABOUK’s direct proposal in September 2014. Mr. Vinod Tawade, Education Minister, Government of Maharashtra gave me this good news on 23 January 2015. Directly after him announcing this at our meeting in London, I was able to take the Minister to visit 10 King Henrys Road, Dr Ambedkar’s home, with its ‘blue plaque’ outside commemorating him living there while he studying in the London School of Economics. I am thrilled by Mr. Tawade public statements that the house will be turned into a memorial to Dr Ambedkar. We look forward to working with the government of Maharashtra and the High Commission of India in London to make sure we achieve this and deliver Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy. Just for this initiative to get this far has already brought so many people together from across the continents wherever the South Asian Diaspora has reached. For untold generations of people to come, 10 King Henrys Road will become a place of pilgrimage for people around the globe inspired by the fractious history of civil rights, the potential successes of social activism and of course, Dr Ambedkar’s legacy. With this philip, the cause can only grow from strength to strength.” Ms Santosh Dass MBE Mob: 07902806342 Arun Kumar, General Secretary Mob: 07909828750 24 January 2015 ibnlive.in/news/maharashtra-government-to-buy-house-in-london-where-dr-ambedkar-stayed/524656-3-237.html
