PRESS RELEASE August 15, 2013 In Letter To US & Bahamian Officials As Well As The UN High Commissioner For Refugees, Ros-Lehtinen Pleads For Their Immediate Intervention So That Bahamian Government Does Not Send Cubans Imprisoned There Back To Castro Dictatorship Miami, Florida – Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) sent a letter today to U.S. and Bahamian officials as well as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees asking for their immediate intervention so that Cubans imprisoned in The Bahamas are not sent back to the Castro dictatorship. Ros-Lehtinen’s missive stated that “In our exile community, we thought a resolution had been reached but now there are news reports that Bahamian authorities will send these democracy loving folks back to Cuba, where they will be brutalized.” The Congresswoman’s letter concludes by stating “Please intercede immediately to stop this human rights abuse from occurring.” Said Ros-Lehtinen, “It is beyond appalling that the Bahamian government has decided to return these freedom seekers back to the hell they were trying to escape from. After Bahamian prison guards were caught on tape beating and taunting Cuban migrants, one would think they would want to clean up their image and agree to send the Cubans to third countries that had offered them asylum. But no, the Bahamian government is demonstrating once again how callous they can be by sending these poor souls back into the grips of the Castro dictatorship where they will be punished for wanting to leave the tropical hell and where their human rights will be stomped on the moment they set food in Castro’s island prison. I’m pleading with these UN, State Department and Bahamian officials as well as the U.N.
