PRESS RELEASE Bamidele’s rally leaves sorrow, tears and blood in Ikere Ado-Ekiti, May 25, 2014. The Labour Party, (LP) rally held today Saturday May 24, 2014 at Ikere, the second largest city in Ekiti State has left one person shot and many others wounded, leaving behind bitter memories of sorrow, tears and blood, a statement by the All Progressive Congress, (APC) has said. A strong member of APC in Ikere Ekiti Otunba Femi Ayodele was shot in the neck by suspected thugs of MOB under the command of one notorious Ade Basket backed by mobile policemen from Akure who came to the rally with Governor Mimiko. Other thugs who participated in the mayhem are, Femi Osabinu, a former Student Union leader in EKSU, Olalekan Soyombo and one Foloruso alias Funny. The APC in a statement issued this evening said supporters of the LP candidate, Mr Opeyemi Bamidele unleashed unprovoked attack on innocent women and children on the vengeance note that locals were shouting Koduro Soke, the campaign slogan of the APC when Mr. Opeyemi and the Ondo State Governor, Mr Olusegun Mimiko mounted the rostrum to address the crowd. The LP candidate also felt intimidated by the display of APC souvenirs in many homes at Ikere making Opeyemis supporters to move from the home of one APC to the other attacking them in their homestead. One of the victims was Otunba Femi Ayodele, who together with his siblings, were holding an engagement ceremony in front of his house in Ikere. The MOB thugs who were moving from house to house saw Fayemi’s posters pasted on the walls of the house and they became enraged. One Olalekan Soyombo, one of the thugs under the command of Ade Basket pointed to the Otunba Femi Ayodele and he was shot instantly on the neck by Ade Basket with a pump action gun. He is presently receiving treatment at the intensive care unit of the State Hospital now. The windows of the house were shattered with bullets. At present, five APC supporters have sustained various degrees of injury while many have fled their homes from the rampaging thugs who were given cover by policemen from Ondo State. Fayemi’s billboards were destroyed all over the town while any house with his posters was visited with violence. “At this moment, we cannot ascertain the number of those wounded, but certainly they are in three digits, the APC spokesperson, Mr Segun Dipe said. According to the APC, “Mr Opeyemi stormed Ikere with a retinue of violent thugs and armed young men, many of them took over the local clubs, shooting sporadically to intimidate and create an atmosphere of siege in a peaceful community noted for its passionate support for the APC.” We call on the Inspector General of Police, (IG) Mr Mohammed Abubakar to investigate the source of the arms being displayed by thugs in the convoy of Mr Opeyemi and why policemen were giving cover to thugs who were shooting innocent people, Mr Dipe said. The APC said that the Labour Party appears not to be interested in the June 21 election but rather to cause chaos and justify his mission which is fueled by the desire to destabilise Ekiti State and halt the democratic gains of the last three and half years. The APC said that Mr Opeyemis rallies have been characterized by sordid stories of blood-letting and organized violence which has become the trademark of Opeyemi Bamidele in almost all the towns he has campaigned. It was the same story in Igbemo last week when APC members were attacked and Governor Fayemi’s billboards were destroyed. The same scenario has repeated itself in Itaji, Ipole-Iloro, Ayede, Ilupeju, Iyin, Okemesi among others. We urge the people of Ikere-Ekiti to remain calm in the face of naked brutality and display of brigandage by the Labour Party. Signed.
