Square, Spokesperson Cell Phone: (504) 259-8702 Email: Brenda.Square@gmail A New Orleans Group Will Demand That Louisiana’s Board of Education Return to Local Control a School Supported by Former Notre Dame Basketball Coach Digger Phelps New Orleans, LA October 12, 2014 On October 14, 2014, the charter school movement in New Orleans will be tested by public school parents, teachers, alumni, and community activists who will demand that Louisiana’s top education board immediately return John McDonogh Sr. High School to local control. They oppose control by any quasi-private charter management organization (generally from another state) and will insist on a “direct-run” traditional high school. Just weeks after Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana’s education officials seized control of 107 New Orleans Public Schools, by retroactively changing an acceptable “School Performance Score” from “60” to “87” effective November 30, 2005. From press conferences to student protests, and several appearances before the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, no other community group has done more to fight the power, politics and private interests of so-called education reform in New Orleans. No group is better qualified to issue a CITIZEN’s REPORT CARD on Louisiana’s so-called Recovery School District (RSD) - where few schools “recovered” and all were turned over to charter operators. On October 14, 2014, members of the John McDonogh Steering Committee will appear before Louisiana’s Board of Elementary and Secondary Education in Baton Rouge, LA to demand an end to the “sham” community engagement process and the immediate return of the school to local control. On the eve of the meeting, October 13th, they will finish grading the RSD and release a REPORT CARD at 6 pm on the steps of “John Mac” located at 2426 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans, LA.
