PRESS RELEASE Conservative Campaign Launches Today in front of supporters, local residents and media, Conservative Party Leader Colin Craig officially launched the 2014 Conservative Party Election Campaign. The theme of the campaign is ‘Stand for Something.’ “Political correctness and an unwillingness to deal with difficult truths has resulted in a false kind of politics that only goes partway toward real solutions,” Mr Craig said. “A vote for the Conservative Party is a vote to take a stand, and return our country to what New Zealanders want it to be,” he said. “This campaign is all about party vote. Last time we achieved 2.7% with a five week campaign. This time we have a full campaign period and the Conservative Party’s goal is to exceed the 5% threshold required to enter parliament,” Mr Craig emphasised. There were three candidate announcements this afternoon: Callum Blair in Upper Harbour, Colin Craig in East Coast Bays, and Mel Taylor in Northland. “The selection of Callum Blair in Upper Harbour should not be taken to mean that Christine Rankin will not be running. There are decisions still to be made, and these will be advised in due course.” Mr Craig confirmed that “polling received this week showed my support is stronger in East Coast Bays than in Rodney. This result was an important part of my decision,” he said. “In election campaigns there is not enough time to talk about every policy, therefore we need to focus on key points. The headline policies of this campaign will be: 1. That referendum become binding on government, 2. That we stop dividing the country on the basis of race. All New Zealanders should have equal rights and privileges under the law 3. That we stop discounting justice. Those who commit crimes do the time they are sentenced to, with longer sentences for violent crimes, and a requirement that prisoner’s do some hard work to repay victims and society. 4. Simplify the tax system, closing loop holes, and the introduction of a tax free threshold that provides a tax break for all New Zealanders, not just the wealthy. ENDS
