PRESS RELEASE: EQUALITY COURT APPEARANCE AGAINST UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA The Higher Education Transformation Network (HETN), acting on behalf of its alumni membership, hereby confirms that the initial sitting of its Equality Court case (EC38/2012) against the University of Pretoria (UP) and Tuks Alumni Board has taken place yesterday on the 11th July 2013 at Court 17, Pretoria Magistrates Court, sitting as Equality Court. Our legal action is aimed at:- • Compelling the UP to re-run the election to elect UP Council members from the Alumni using rules, statute and policies that are in line with the spirit and object of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and PEPUDA Act 4 of 2000 • Denouncing and putting aside the white male alumni elections results to serve on the UP Council • Seeking a declaration of invalidity of the UP’s rules, policies and regulations that are not in line with the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and PEPUDA Act 4 of 2000. The HETN has, to the best of its ability, presented its opening arguments in front of the Chief Magistrate and contrary to the arguments presented by the UP and Tuks Alumni Board, our argument is that we believe that the Equality Court has the necessary jurisdiction to hear our case and make the necessary determinations in line with the Constitution of the Republic of RSA. Judgement has been reserved and will be delivered by the Equality Court on the 31st July 2013. We remain confident that justice will take its course and the broader society will ultimately benefit from this process. Ends
