PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DATE: June 28, 2013 Contact: Community Empowerment Association, Inc. T. Rashad Byrdsong, CEO (412) 371-3689 “Urban Agenda: Addressing Police Misconduct” On July 2, 2013 at 6pm, Community Empowerment Association in collaboration with the Coalition of Urban Affairs will be hosting a Community Forum to address Police Misconduct. The goal of the forum is to develop Action Campaigns to assess the interactions of African American residents with Police especially related to: • Racial Profiling • Unwarranted Stop and Frisk, • Unprofessional Behavior by Police Officers, • Unprovoked encounters, • Constitutional rights violations How best do we identify the volume of offenses against our Community at the hands of the Police? Despite excellent efforts of community organizations to establish policies and legislation on stopping police misconduct, we must admit that unfortunately these policies are not being enforced, as we know of incidents where: • Individuals are still being accosted by the police while walking down the street; • Residents are being arrested for Asking Questions, which seems to mean you were “Resisting Arrest.” • We live daily with ongoing Racial Profiling • And numerous situations involving violence at the hands of police and the delays of calls to EMS for help for the victims. Our community is dealing with the situations above and more, each and every day, these are not isolated events. Your experiences will provide data that allows a look into the truth, and it will be critical in the development and/or enforcement of Laws and Policies to protect our rights to: “Look in our cars to get a business card, without being charged with Obstruction of Traffic, Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Arrest.” This is a Call To Action. The forum is being held on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 6pm at the Community Empowerment Association facility at 7120 Kelly Street in Homewood (formerly Holy Rosary School). We are calling on the NAACP, B-PEP, Urban League, the Alliance for Police Accountability, and all urban residents, advocacy organizations and civic leaders are to attend. Let’s collectively develop the Plan of Action to identify and address this pattern of Police Misconduct. This pattern has been in existence in the City of Pittsburgh for many years - good work has been done - but there is more work to do. Come out on July 2nd and support this effort.
