PRESS RELEASE First Selectman Joseph S. Mazza Guilford Today, I am announcing my intention to seek a second term as the First Selectman of Guilford. My decision comes with the support of my family and the many friends and acquaintances I have come to know. Four years ago I accepted my party’s nomination to run for First Selectman. I made many promises to the citizens of Guilford. I promised to restore Guilford to a financially healthy town without sacrificing the programs and services our citizens require. I stated (and I quote) “A town that is financially healthy can provide excellent services that contribute to high quality of life, support an excellent education system, maintain its infrastructure and control the cost of our government.” I also stated that in order for Guilford to accomplish these goals we must change the direction of our financial management. I promised to protect our quality of life, while we grew our Fund Balance, improved our bond rating and earned the respect of the financial markets. I also assured our citizens that Guilford would not witness the political rancor that so many government leaders seem to thrive on. Our successes were not done at the expense of reducing programs and services that make up the fabric of our community. It was accomplished through the execution of a plan with specific and long-range goals. Under our leadership through a bipartisan effort and the efforts of our department heads, our employees and countless citizen volunteers, we accomplished many good things. I am seeking another term because there is more work to do. We have to continue to keep the increases in the cost of government to a minimum, while increasing our reserves. We must continue to improve our town roads and buildings, including the construction of our new high school. Guilford must continue to grow our grand list by attracting more economic development, so that Guilford is not only a great place to live in, but also shop and work. I look forward to seeking the Republican party’s nomination for the office of First Selectman, along with my running mates, Cindy Cartier & Charles Havrda, who have also agreed to seek another term on Our Board of Selectmen.
