PRESS RELEASE Fishing Communities of Praslin and Savannes Bay to benefit from New Jetties The Ministries of Infrastructure and Agriculture are teaming up to bring to an end the troubles of fishermen of two local communities, which depend heavily on fishing for survival, with the construction of a jetty in each community. The community of Praslin presently has two timber jetties, built by fishermen of the area, but both are in a terrible state of disrepair, and in the community of Savannes Bay, there are no jetties. The Fishermen Infrastructure Development in Praslin and Savannes Bay Project, as it’s being termed, is spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture but the construction of the two jetties will be supervised by the Ministry of Infrastructure. Cognizant of the fishing and touristic potential of Praslin and Savannes Bay, government sought funding from the Republic of China (Taiwan) to undertake the project, with a view to stimulate economic development and thus improve the lives of the people of the two communities. It is also hoped the project will encourage more fishermen of the two communities to acquire larger fishing vessels to improve and enhance their fishing activities and also stimulate their possible entry into heritage tourism tours. All relevant stakeholders including government departments, fishermen from the two communities, The Saint Lucia National Trust and constituency councils were engaged in consultation in order to come up with the most suitable design and location of the structures. The entire project comes at a cost of EC $1, 000, 000 and will incorporate the erection of two timber T-Jetties with concrete abutments. The Taiwanese Embassy has already handed over to government most of the funds necessary to undertake the project and will hand over the balance of funds at one of two ceremonies to break ground for the project on Thursday January 22nd 2015. The first ceremony will be held at Savannes Bay at 2:30 pm and will be followed by a similar activity at Praslin. Both will see addresses delivered by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Port Services and Transport Hon Philip J Pierre and Minister for Agriculture, Food Production, Fisheries, Cooperatives and Rural Development Hon Moses Jn Baptiste.
