PRESS RELEASE: IEC EVALUATES THE 2014 GENERAL ELECTIONS Following the October 24, 2014 General Elections, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is embarking on yet another critical phase of the electoral cycle – evaluation of the process of the general elections. The evaluations are part of the preliminary activities towards preparations for the next anticipated General Elections in 2019. Election evaluation is a norm in a functioning democracy that is mandatory to allow the citizenry to critic the election process and suggest improvement thereon. The IEC has divided the evaluations among various stakeholders. The first evaluation was conducted in November 2014 by the Commission’s managers. On the 29th January 2015 evaluation of the election will resume country wide with all the Returning Officers in Gaborone followed by those in Jwaneng/Francistown, Maun/Palapye on the 3rd and 5th February 2015 respectively. The election evaluation workshops are meant to review efficiency of the just ended electoral process and effectiveness of the legal framework to determine possible improvement. The participating stakeholders will be expected to share experiences and suggest recommendations on relevant sections of the electoral laws and improvement of the administrative processes by the Commission. The final 2014 general elections evaluation workshop comprising civil society, media, political party representatives will be conducted from the 19th to 20th February 2015. The workshop will interrogate and review recommendations from IEC managers, returning officers and submitted observer missions’ reports. The reviewed recommendations from the workshop will form the final recommendations that the Commission will submit to the Executive for consideration in preparation for the anticipated 2019 general elections.
