PRESS RELEASE Issued: October 11, 2014 Blaenavon on verge of first vet’s surgery in 50 years Blaenavon could be on the verge of getting its first vet’s surgery in half a century. The last time there was a vet in the town was in the 1960s, when the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) visited once a week with a mobile service. Budget Vets - which has five surgeries in Newport and across the valleys - is now also planning to send a mobile service one morning a week with the intention of making it permanent if successful. The service will operate out of the former Bethlehem Chapel In the town centre starting on Wednesday October 22, from 9.30am–12.30pm. “This is a new venture for us,” said Budget Vets Operations Manager Kate Davies. “We’ve been working for some time to prepare a mobile unit to offer additional services to clients. Many Blaenavon pet owners currenty use our Abertillery and Newport branches. “The surgery will take place every Wednesday, starting with just the mornings and if successful extending to 4.30pm. If that proves popular, we’ll also look at possibly putting a small permanent surgery in the town.” The mobile clinic will provide general consultations, micro-chipping, vaccinations and pet food/prescriptions and will also pre-arrange collections of pets from Blaenavon if they need to be seen at other clinics. Budget offer 10% off their fees for over-60s and people working for the National Health Service, Fire Service, Police and Armed Forces. Their Malpas Road practice was recently featured in BBC Wales’s Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience series, when the comedian visited Newport to try his hand at being a vet for a day. The new service is the result of a Facebook campaign by local residents, and was supported by the borough’s new enterprise facilitation project, Torfaen EFFECT, which helped to coordinate and locate suitable premises for the service. “Budget have a reputation for providing excellent value for money and a service in caring for animals that’s hugely rated by pet lovers,” said Jayne Skyrme, Enterprise Facilitator with Torfaen EFFECT. “Bethlehem Chapel’s schoolroom has been renovated and its central position in Broad Street makes it a perfect location. The drive for this started from a post on Facebook and, with support from the community. a fantastic service is now being introduced to the town.” • People wanting to make appointments to go to the Blaenavon surgery will need to book through the Newport site, telephone 01633 855825.
