PRESS RELEASE No. 001 NORA AUNOR GETS ANOTHER NOMINATION from the ‘Oscars’ of Asia Pacific MANILA, Philippines - With two APSA trophies under her belt, Philippine superstar and ‘People’s National Artist’ Nora Aunor gets another nod from this prestigious film award dubbed as the equivalent of the Oscars in the region. Aunor is nominated for best actress at the 8th Asia Pacific Screen Awards or APSA for her portrayal of ‘Biring’ in the film, ‘Hustisya.’ Biring works for a powerful human trafficking syndicate in Manila, and her job was to bribe the authorities to turn a blind eye to the illegal activity. Four other acting heavyweights compete for the best actress plum, including Ronit Elkabetz in ‘Gett, The Trial of Viviane Amsalem’ from Israel/France/Germany, Lü Zhong in ‘Chuangru Zhe’ (Red Amnesia) from the Peoples Republic of China, Tang Wei in Huangjin Shidai (The Golden Era), also from the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong (PRC), and Merila Zareie in ‘Shiar-E 143’ (Track 143) from the Islamic Republic of Iran. Nora Aunor is the only Academy member in this roster of best actress nominees, having been officially inducted in November 2012 with her nomination for Brillante Mendoza’s ‘Thy Womb.’ The rest will be inducted prior to the glittering awards ceremony to be held in Brisbane’s historic City Hall on Dec. 11, 2014, with nominees and industry luminaries in attendance. This would be Aunor’s third time to take the spotlight at the annual APSAs. The first was in 2008 when the 1982 classic ‘Himala’ by Ishmael Bernal was honored as the Best Asia Pacific Film of All Time, besting Akira Kurosawa’s ‘Seven Samurai’ and Ang Lee’s ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ among others. The second was in 2012, when she won Best Actress for her moving portrayal of ‘Shaleha’ in Thy Womb. The Philippines’s Giancarlo Abrahan scored a screenplay nomination for his work in ‘Dagitab’ (Sparks). Both ‘Hustisya’ and ‘Dagitab’ premiered at the 10th Cinemalaya Film Festival in August. The APSAs, proudly presented by Treasury Casino and Hotel, is supported by Brisbane City Council and managed by economic development board Brisbane Marketing in a unique collaboration with Paris-based UNESCO and FIAPF-International Federation of Film Producers Associations, recognize and promote cinematic excellence and cultural diversity of the world’s fastest growing film region: comprising 70 countries and areas, 4.5 billion people, and responsible for half of the world’s film output.
