PRESS RELEASE OSUN ELECTION: CACOL CONDEMNS THE ARREST OF APC LEADERS The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) has condemned the arrest of the Spokesman for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed by some armed and masked security agents in Osogbo on Friday night. Alhaji Lai Mohammed was arrested along with Mr. Sunday Dare, the Media Aide to APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Mr. Afolabi Salisu, Deputy Chief of Staff to Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State. Speaking on behalf of the Coalition, its Executive Chairman, Mr. Debo Adeniran, who condemned the arrest, described it as a repression, which is against the spirit of true democracy. He said, “The arrest of the APC stalwarts in Osun State is highly reprehensible. There is element of repression in the arrest of APC leaders, which every Nigerian of good conscience must condemn. The statistics so far shows that the arrest is against the ruling party in the state. As much as we want to steer clear of partisanship, we maintain that the security agencies did not need to arrest anybody except they have established that they have committed any offence. People should be allowed to exercise their constitutional right in the way they want, they must not be repressed by the security agents as that could be the beginning of violent election in the country.” Speaking further, the human rights activist frowned the use of masked security agents to provide security. “The masked people parading Osun State cannot be confirmed whether they are regular security agents or thugs to some political parties. Anybody could have been able to make the kind of t-shirts they wear and write DSS on it. Once they are masked and they don’t have numbers on their t-shirts, nothing whatsoever to identify them except that they are carrying guns that resemble that of police that is a wrong way to conduct election that will not be lopsided at the end of the day.” Mr. Adeniran however called on President Goodluck Jonathan to cause an investigation into the arrest and detention of the APC leaders and punish any security agent found to have abused his office in the matter.
