PRESS RELEASE Organising For Rivers has noted with dismay the protracted political crises rocking Rivers State. While we agree that they are not unexpected in politics, especially that of succession of government, which should necessarily generate heated debates among interested political entities from across all divides, we take serious exception to the fact the political system should be grossly and dangerously manipulated to achieve the near-collapse if not total collapse susbsisting government as is the case in Rivers State. To this end, we wish to state the following: 1. The current political crises in Rivers State has assumed a dangerous dimension and is capable of enveloping the state in full scale skirmishes and economic attrition if the trend continues unchecked. 2. The political actors in the unfortunate melodrama not being strangers to themselves ought to take steps to make the needed compromises and preserve the hard won battle against insurgency in the state in order to keep it on a progressive path of peace and development. 3. The unfortunate shooting of the State Commissioner for Sports whether or not accidental, attempted murder or politically-motivated, except proven otherwise, may have signalled the first shot in a new twist that may endanger lives, properties and investments in Rivers State if the police high command is unable to unmask the perpetrators of the dastardly act, and promptly. 4. We acknowledge the current frosty relations between the President of Nigeria, His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi over issues of politics and hereby advocate for an ambicable resolution in the best interest of the Nigerian state especially the Niger delta people who rightly deserve better representation and strategic positioning in the politics of Nigeria. 4. We condemn all forms of advocacy that undermines the unity of Rivers people, Niger Deltans and Nigerians, especially those that tend to pitch our leaders against themselves regardless of the social ranking of the advocates. 5. We have observed that the politics of succession of government of the state no doubt have begun in earnest, which is a good development. We therefore urge all Rivers people to participate fully in all discussions pertaining choosing the next round of leaders in the state and giving support to individuals only on the basis of competence and proven capacities to perform. 6. Finally, we call on all parties involved in the crises to sheath their swords and place the best interest of the state before theirs. It is our belief that with the forthright involvement of Rivers people in the politics of the state, it would be preserved from being destroyed by unproductive and self-centered politics.
