PRESS RELEASE..PRESS RELEASE October 2013 Low Floor High Payload 3.5 ton Truck KFS Special Vehicles Ltd based in Andover Hampshire have developed a 3.5 ton drop side truck for use within the bottle gas and compressed air distribution market. Specialising in the design and manufacture of light weight 3.5 ton vehicles, KFS produce in excess of 120 units per year for a wide range of applications in both the public and private sector. Building predominately on a chassis converted Platform the favoured base vehicles are either Fiat or Citroen, both cabs coming out of the same production facility in Italy. The cabs although identical visually, have different drive trains, the Fiat uses a 2.3litre 130ps Euro 5 while the Citroen is a 2.2 litre 130ps Euro 5. The Plant & Go model range on which the new vehicle is based has been in service for over 4 years in the tool hire market and landscaping sector, and has proved enormously successful. The secret to the vehicles popularity is the ingenious way in which KFS have designed the chassis and body. The chassis conversion is firstly fully type approved and recognised by the base vehicle supplier, so the front end warranty is not compromised in anyway. The vehicle has torsion bar rear suspension which not only allows the floor to sit only 530mm off the ground, but when under load the vehicles driving characteristics are far better than a high floored chassis cab alternative. The vehicle deck is an extruded aluminium plank designed by KFS and manufactured in Europe. The floor is fixed and glued directly to the chassis and a bonded GRP collar gives both a smooth transition from cab to body, and also additional structural strength. The bulk head is an aluminium fabrication with the drop sides and rear side boards over the wheel box also being aluminium. The lift on the first 2 vehicles built is a DEL GB500G which has been design specifically for the movement of gas and air bottles. The vehicle has some key features which makes it the ideal tool for delivering gas and air bottles;- •The vehicle has a kerb weight of less than 2,000kg so has the capacity to carry up to 1,500kg if plated at 3.5 ton (higher payloads available on 4.5 ton vehicles). •The deck height is only 530mm so health and safety concerns surrounding operatives loading and unloading cylinders are greatly reduced. •Anyone can drive the vehicle with regards driving licence classification. •The vehicle does not need to be operated on a tachograph. •With a combined MPG sitting at around thirty, and 30,000 mile service intervals the vehicle also ticks all the boxes when considering whole life costs.
