PRESS RELEASE: Peckham’s Founder Tony Johnston In Brand New Hyndland Venture Tony Johnston, owner and founder of west end mainstay Peckham’s has been a very busy man recently. Quietly but somewhat determinedly, he has been embarking on the major redevelopment of one of his original deli sites on Clarence Drive. The Hyndland Fox, as it is now known, will be the latest in a series of incarnations for the corner site- originally Hardie’s the fishmonger, it has also been home to a toyshop before being transformed into the first of the Peckham’s sites in 1982. Soon, it will be what Tony says is an eatery come coffee house offering a truly alternative dining and drinking experience for the people of Hyndland and beyond. Now stripped back to the brick (literally), the space is filled with texture- cool brass, warm leathers and stripped oak, it seems the teams’ primary focus has been creating a space where time stands still and people can drop in for a quick drink and end up staying the evening with friends. With the aesthetics taken care of, it is the subject of food that really gets Tony excited. Of the menu, he says- “The plates on these menus are truly meant to be savoured- there is homely, warming dishes, big salad bowls, and grazing boards made for long conversations, proper home baking and brunch worth leaving bed for.” The menu will vary slightly allowing for daytime and evening patrons, and the drinks on offer are every bit as varied. Artisan coffees, although available throughout the evening, will gradually give way to a very careful selection of craft beers and BYOB wines (from Peckham’s of course). The Fox will have a unique drinks flight offering- three carefully crafted Bloody Mary’s, something we suspect it will quickly become known for. Many of the portable items on the menu, and certainly an attractive range of freshly ground coffee, will be available via a take away hatch for those passing by. For the little ones, chef promises to cater for them, but hastens to add there will be no “chicken shapes and baked beans”. Instead, think real little portions for real little people, with the babies being treated to organic carrot puree on the house. It’s certainly set to be a social place- there will be a pretty sizable range of wine clubs and tasting events, and post launch, the guys say there will be a big focus on taking home The Fox food for dinner parties or quieter moments of culinary indulgence.
