PRESS RELEASE Suva Fiji 06/08/ 2013 For immediate Release Leadership is crucial to thrive as a nation: Joeli Cawaki Divisional Commissioner Western, Joeli Ratulevu Cawaki, reaffirmed to fifty student’s leaders that leadership is an important aspect for a nation to prosper. Speaking on the theme “Leading is not what you do, but who you are”, Cawaki said “Leadership is absolutely central to our ability to thrive as individual, as families, as communities and as a nation,” The senior government official made the statement while addressing student leaders from 25 secondary schools in the western division at the Transparency International (TI) Fiji‘s organised “Youth Integrity Initiative” workshop at Fun World Centre in Nadi over the weekend. “More than ever, Fiji needs leaders, leaders with the right attitude and leadership qualities,” said Cawaki, adding Leadership is about bringing about the change. “Leadership is defined as the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute towards the effectiveness and success of an organization or group of which they are members,” said Cawaki. TI Fiji, the organisation fighting against corruption believes as leaders of the future, youth have to be made certain the skills and knowledge to become leaders who can conduct their duties with integrity, accountability and be transparent at all times regardless of what profession they enter. The fight against corruption is not an easy task, but having youth mobilized and empowered will bring the fight against corruption much easier. “ Seriously, as aspiring leaders of tomorrow you must continue to strive, continue to seek, continue to find but to yield anything less than the characteristics and the qualities that make a good leader,” said Cawaki. “Additionally, leadership is about understanding people and involving them to help you do a job. That takes all of the good characteristics like integrity, dedication of purpose, selflessness, knowledge, skill, implacability, as well as determination not to accept failure,” said Cawaki. Cawaki also reminder young people that a leader should be visionary, integrity, honesty, respect, motivation, professionalism and being exemplary. TI Fiji has successfully held two (2) leadership and integrity workshops in the main island of Viti Levu with the central/Eastern students and recently with the western students. The third leadership and integrity workshop will take place in Savusavu on the 16th- 18 of this month. By: Kasim Nazeem.
